Matthew George - Pride - Kendrick Lamar is the greatest song of all time. It is set apart from other songs with the theme of pride and its destructive nature causing hurt to personal wellbeing. "I don't trust people enough beyond their surface world, I don't love people enough to put my faith in man" This quote shows the connection between pride and Kendrick's day to day life. Kendrick shares how his pride causes problems with trust and faith, it shows his vulnerability. "Sick venom in men and women overcome with pride. A perfect world is never perfect, only filled with lies. Promises are broken and more resentment come alive. Race barriers make inferior of you and I" Kendrick describes a "perfect world" as just an illusion and how a perfect world is merely a mask of the truth, he also explains how pride is like a venom. Pride is usually referred to as confidence, however Kendrick believes that people use pride as an excuse for ego and arrogance. He explains how broken promises cause resentment and loops it into race barriers, the idea of racism is purely because of pride; believing one race is above another is a perfect example of pride being used as "venom". Now the opening lyrics of the song, "Love's gonna get you killed. But pride's gonna be the death of you, and you and me" talks about love as empathy and vulnerability and how in a world of ego, violence and betrayal (Kendrick's description of pride) can cause pain and loss. Kendrick believes pride is more dangerous than love because it's destructive and hurts both people with a relationship. Love makes us too vulnerable, but pride destroys trust and connections. The major ideas/themes in this song highlight Kendrick's ability to add meaning through his songs, this is what sets him apart from the rest. Final rating 10/10 stars.
